Understanding Melasma and its treatments

Clear, beautiful skin is the goal of every patient who visits the Skin and Laser Surgery Center of New England. This is why the development of imperfections can often cause patients to visit with a dermatological professional for understanding melasma laser treatment. Patients who have developed gray or brown patches on the face may be unsure what has caused them to appear. In many instances, they are a sign of a condition known as melasma.

What is melasma?

At the Skin and Laser Surgery Center of New England, our professionals describe melasma as a skin concern that can impact a patient’s self-confidence and appearance. This is because it develops patches on the facial skin that patients might not be able to disguise with cosmetics.

Who is diagnosed with melasma?

Melasma is common in women, with only approximately 10% of cases occurring in men. Those with darker skin are more likely to develop melasma, including those of the following ethnicities:

  •         Middle Eastern
  •         Indiana
  •         North African
  •         African-American
  •         Latin/Hispanic
  •         Mediterranean

What causes melasma?

Professionals are still trying to determine what causes melasma in one patient and not another. However, we are learning more about this condition every day, and it appears as though patients with darker skin may be more prone to the condition because of active melanocytes that are more present in their skin than those of lighter-skinned individuals. There are also certain triggers that have been linked to melasma including increased sun exposure, hormonal changes, and the use of certain skincare products. With a proper diagnosis, treatment options can be discussed.

How is melasma treated?

Dermatologists are finding that there are several different approaches that can be made to treat melasma. After a definitive diagnosis, patients can then ask about some of the following ways in which melasma can be reduced:

  •         Oral treatments
  •         Chemical peels
  •         Topical medications
  •         In-office laser and light therapies
