What is eyelid surgery?

A blepharoplasty, also called an eye lift, is an eyelid surgery that removes excess skin and fat. It tightens the underlying muscles as necessary to give the patient a younger, more rested appearance. The procedure is popular with both women and men because the signs of aging are so obvious in the eyes. Also, the results are very dramatic, yet at the same time subtle. Most people don’t realize a person has had eyelid surgery; they only feel as though the person looks somehow younger.

Who are good candidates for eyelid surgery?

Due to their constant exposure to the sun and the environment, the eyelids and surrounding tissues can lose elasticity and begin to sag. Anyone with one or more of the following conditions would benefit from the surgery:

• Droopy eyelids
• Saggy eyelids
• Bags under their eyes

What are the differences between laser blepharoplasty and traditional blepharoplasty?

In traditional blepharoplasty, a surgical blade is used to cut the skin and remove the excess fat. With laser-assisted blepharoplasty, a micro-focused CO2 laser is used to cut the skin and remove the fat. Laser blepharoplasty causes less bleeding and bruising, which leads to a faster recovery.

Can blepharoplasty be done on both the upper and lower lids?

The surgery generally involves removing excess skin and removing or repositioning underlying fat. It is done under local anesthesia and in an outpatient setting. Typically, upper and lower eyelids can be done in about 2-3 hours. In the upper eyelid, Dr. Khatri makes the incision in the natural crease of the eyelid. This hides any visible scarring. Excess skin is removed, fat repositioned or removed, and the underlying muscles, which have lost some of their tautness, are tightened. Dr. Khatri pays particular attention to fat, preferring repositioning it to removing it. He believes that removing too much fat can leave the patient with a hollowed outlook.

For the lower eyelid, Dr. Khatri has two options for the incision location. It can be made just below the eyelash or inside the lower eyelid. On the lower eyelid, fat herniation is often the problem. The removal of fat and excess skin will eliminate puffiness and bags.

What is the downtime after surgery?

It’s easy to assume that eyelid surgery, with its need for delicacy, would be difficult to recover from. Recovery from eyelid surgery is not overly painful and doesn’t require an extended amount of time. All patients experience bruising and swelling of varying degrees which can usually last about a week are so. However, in some patients, it can last longer. After your surgery, we’ll provide you with a cold compress and lubricating eye drops. If you use the compress diligently, your swelling and bruising can be kept to a minimum.

Usually, Dr. Khatri will remove your stitches in about one week and your eyes will already look better. There will be some residual swelling, but that is minimal. Scarring is very minimal, due to the ability to hide the incision locations so effectively.

How long will my results last?

It’s generally thought that upper eyelid surgery shows its best results for the next seven years or so. Lower eyelid surgery may even longer. If more sagging occurs in the upper eyelids, a brow lift can often address it.

Eye Surgery Procedure

During the initial consultation, the procedure, expected results, and complications are all discussed with Dr. Khatri. Along with addressing all questions and possible concerns, we provide patients with their necessary prescriptions. Skin measurements are taken to ensure that the right amount of skin is removed. Surgical lines are marked followed by the injection of local anesthesia and the application of anesthetic drops into the eyes. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, laser and/or surgical knife are used to cut and remove the skin. Once we remove the skin, we identify the fat pads and remove them. We make sure there is no active bleeding. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are stitched up and bandaged.

One week later, patients return for their one-week suture removal. Patients are then seen one, three, and six months after the procedure for follow-up.
