How sclerotherapy address spider veins?
Spider veins and varicose veins that develop on the legs can be unsightly, and in the case of varicose veins, uncomfortable. Varicose veins can cause issues including itching, aching, and cramping of the legs. These diseased veins are more than just cosmetic and can be treated with the help of a professional. The team at the Skin and Laser Surgery Center of New England is here to assist with a treatment known as sclerotherapy.
What is sclerotherapy? How sclerotherapy address spider veins?
Sclerotherapy is a treatment used for spider and varicose veins. It uses a sclerosing gel that can close up the vein permanently and allow the body to absorb it. Blood in the veins will be redirected to healthier veins in the legs to maintain circulation, and the visibility of these veins is eliminated. Patients are advised that this is a process that does not happen overnight. The injections are done directly into the veins in the office. Patients then wear compression garments and follow the aftercare instructions provided by our team after their first treatment. In some cases, several injections may be needed, especially for larger, more noticeable veins in the legs.
Who is a candidate for sclerotherapy?
Most patients with spider and varicose veins are appropriate candidates for sclerotherapy. While we also offer laser treatments for spider and varicose veins, we always recommend the use of injections first. This is one of the most reliable options for treating veins. In certain situations, our team may recommend laser treatments to patients.
Is sclerotherapy permanent?
Yes! Once a vein is closed up, it will not redevelop at a later time. However, even though the blood is redirected, varicose and spider veins can develop elsewhere.
